James Culbert was born in Ireland about 1798, emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1820s, and resided in Wilmington, Delaware until his death in 1871. Details on James can be found here: James John Culbert<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n James is described here because I have found evidence that he was the older brother of my immigrant ancestor, Moses Culbert (1804-1860). There is abundant material available documenting his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I have chosen to add John as James’ middle name here to distinguish him from the numerous other James Culbert records I have collected in my research. Our Culbert family historian, Anne Culbert Bourne Schulz, referred to him as James John Culbert in her 2-page letter dated 20 Jul 1972 to the family on her research and speculations on our Culbert and Fleming ancestors. She did not document where she found the middle name John, and I note that he was named just James Culbert in all documentation I have found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, I have found a Petition for Naturalization record for a John Culbert, United States District Court, New Castle County, Delaware, No. 84, dated 30 Sep 1830. This petition states that John, born in Ireland, had been a resident of the U.S. for seven years [the required minimum at that time]. Since I have found no other record of any kind beyond that date for a John Culbert in the U.S. that fits this person, I believe this John to also be our James Culbert who resided in Wilmington, Delaware in the mid-1800s.
