A Prisoner of War (POW)

18 September 1944 – Surrendered at an airfield N of Berlin – was marched into town to a cell where we were searched. In the afternoon took a train into Berlin and rode elevated to the south part of the city to a Luftwaffe camp.

19 September 1944 – Left the Luftwaffe Camp – back to RR station in Berlin where I met [Sgt. Karl] Buschenfelt – wounded on a stretcher. Took train for dulag – troop train – very crowded.

20 September 1944 – Arrived at dulag luft early in morning – was interrogated and searched. Took a hot shower – in afternoon moved into another compound to be shipped out. His record is seen below.

21 September 1944 – Left dulag early in morning on train to Wetzler N of Frankfort – met Ed [Hennegan] there and [Sgt. Emmett] Bennett – first good meal since shot down. Hot bath and clothes.

24 September 1944 – Left transient camp with Ed + about 150 other officers – walked thru town to RR station + were all put in 1 car – bars on windows – were issued Red X food parcel to last until we arrived at Stalag 1 – also German bread and sausage.

27 September 1944 – Arrived in Barth around noon in a driving rain – met by German guards from here with dogs. Marched three miles thru the rain to the camp where we were searched, photographed and assigned to our barracks. Ed and I to Block 7 room 12 – there were 14 men in this room – all “old Kriegies” – we slept in the hall for two days and then moved into room 12 – eating our meals in rms. 8 and 9. Room 8: Cy Nicmic (sp?), Patterson (Los Angeles), Bert Monaco (St. Louis), Bill O’Brien (Providence), Lorentz (H.H. [Haddon Heights?] NJ), Peterson (Louisiana).

6-7 October 1944 – Heavies from the 8th AF over Barth – both days – Football and softball games here now – weather is clear and warm.

8 October 1944 – First football game in the competition. Blk. [Block] 7 beat Blk. 2 – 12-6

12 October 1944 – Had a note from Gene today – he is in the north camp. Lots of others I know there are from our group – also Bud Walton [friend from home], Jack Parker.

17 October 1944 – Air raid alert – we must remain in our barracks – there are no air raid shelters here. Mosquitos [British planes] raided Barth – strafed R.R. [railroad]

21 October 1944 – Aachen and Belgrade fell today – looks like an offensive in the west. Everyone thinks the war’ll be over before Christmas.

24 October 1944 – Block 7 beat Block 13 – 6-0. Leading the league. Russian attacks in E. Prussia.

25 October 1944 – Saw “You Can’t Take It With You” at the theater – American production – very good. Immediate vicinity alert.

30 October 1944 – Germans issued us one keg of beer per block – lousy, weak stuff. Block 7 wins the football championship.

4 November 1944 – German general inspected the camp today – we all had x-rays of our chests taken in a portable outfit at the theater.

7 November 1944 – A Gallup poll of the Kriegies gives Roosevelt 1001 votes to Dewey 256 – Room 12 evenly divided.

8 November 1944 – Col. Malstrom announced at roll call this a.m. – Roosevelt elected by a landslide. General Patton has started offensive at Aachen.

9 November 1944 – Bud Walton walked in to see me this morning with some fudge and cigs – He looks good – is working in the kitchen over there.

11 November 1944 – Armistice Day – wish it was for World War II – had a period of silence at roll call.

15 November 1944 – Air raid alert today – no planes – Sweden rumors were squelched after becoming too prevalent, by Col. Malstrom.

17 November 1944 – German General in camp today – had a show in the hall in our block tonite – orchestra – very good.

20 November 1944 – Went to the theatre this evening – English play “The Amazing Sir Clittenhouse” – pretty good acting but dull plot.

23 November 1944 – Red X [Cross] parcels cut to one every 2 weeks – Am. [American] gains in Alsace.

27 November 1944 – Roll call changed from 8 to 0930 and 1530 – days getting shorter.

29 November 1944 – Movie in camp – Sleamie Slurbin [?] in “Spring Parade”. The sound was lousy but I enjoyed it anyway.

30 November 1944 – Thanksgiving day – East-West all star football game 0-0. Lashly Gidelfigs + Glee Club in blks. tonite – good show. Ate well today.

9 December 1944 – Germans allowed us to send a 9 word greeting to our next of kin today – looks like we’re going to be here Xmas anyway.

13 December 1944 – Protecting power representatives in camp today.

14 December 1944 – R.A.F. Ragamuffins in bks. tonite – Sgt. Charlie Hart & Co. – really good but their jokes stink.

15 December 1944 – Col. Zemkel arrived today – fighter ace – A** kissing in sports field with General Elsasses as M.C. Jet propulsion over today – first I’ve seen.

18 December 1944 – Red X parcels are to be opened and inspected by the Germans from now on – suspect contraband being smuggled in – they say!

23 December 1944 – Christmas parcels distributed today – looks like we eat – 5 parcels for every 6 men – pipes and tobacco – candy, plum pudding + turkey!

24 December 1944 – Lights on until 0130 tonite – had a swell program in the block tonite by guys in block 7 – Ragamuffins came over – beautiful clear night – wish I were home.

25 December 1944 – Had a huge meal today – baked two big cakes – went to the carol service in the chapel at 1400 – It’s not like home or Christmas either. War news very sad.

27 December 1944 – Bud [Walton] came over today – he got his first letter from home – from his mother on Dec 25th – the lucky guy – sure would like to get one myself. Ice rink being dug today.

28 December 1944 – Germans refused to provide water from hydrants so we formed a bucket brigade and started filling it [the ice rink] from our fire water supply – didn’t do much good but we’ll make it.

31 December 1944 – New Yearís Eve – lights on until 0130 again – Sonny Schlosberg show in barracks – lots of Kriegie brew around – 1945 can’t be much worse than ’44.

1 January 1945 – Hitler addressed the German people last night – said 1945 would be a year of great sacrifice but they will still win the war – oh yeah!

7 January 1945 – The German counterattack at Malmedy looks serious – making good progress towards Leige.

10 January 1945 – Germans replaced all our 200W light bulbs with 40W – can not even read at night now. German attacks in west slowing up.

12 January 1945 – R.A.F. play “Hay Fever” in theater – pretty sad attempt. Noel Coward – author.

14 January 1945 – Germans issued order that all Jews will be moved to the north compound. H. [Haskell] Rubin from our room is going and Zeke’s [Warren Donovan’s] pilot (Jack Larsen) is replacing him. The Russians started a great offensive from their Barenov and Narev beachheads. Looks good so far.

18 January 1945 – Went ice skating early this a.m. – lousey [sic] – clamp skates keep falling off. Bud came over for a while – no more mail. Warsaw fell today – Russians really going places.

19 January 1945 – Jews moved out today – Larsen seems like a good guy – lives in Houston Texas.

20 January 1945 – Kracow and Lodz (Littsmanstadt) fell today – Russians really gobbling up East Prussia.

21 January 1945 – Tilsit fell – Russians going strong heading for Koenigsberg & Danzig.

24 January 1945 – Insterburg – S. of Koenigsburg + Mareinburg occupied today.

26 January 1945 – Kriegies from evacuated camps expected soon – Blocks 11-13-14 moved to provide room for them – we’ve got over 200 in our block now – Hank Devereaux and Okee DeRemo moved in our room. Am eating in Room 12 now.

4 February 1945 – Russians have evidently slowed down – now 30 M. SE of Stetten and on the Oder N. of Frankfort.

5 February 1945 – Germans fumigated barracks today – moved all our food & bedding into empty room in blk. 13 for the day – terrible smell – couldn’t sleep.

6 February 1945 – Heard that Manila fell – Gen. MacArthur liberated 5000 Krieges [sic.] there. Big air raid tonite – flak visible over Stetten – lots of planes over.

7 February 1945 – 1500 new kriegies arrived today – all American sgts. (air crew) from camps in E. Pomerania E. of Stetten – they say the towns are full of German evacuees from the Russians. None of our crew among them.

9 February 1945 – Germans searched bks. – locked out from roll call until noon. Canadian Army started offensive in West at Nemwegen [?].

10 February 1945 – Room 12’s average opinion on the length of the war is 14 weeks. We are on half rations of Red X parcels again this week.

11 February 1945 – The lights have been off for two days – water keeps going off too. We use kriegie lamps at night – burn margarine for fuel.

12 February 1945 – Five months a kriegie today – lights on tonight for a change. Worked on my kriegie book [this journal] today – Canadians making slow progress. Remo [Okee DeRemo] says we have our own camp censor for mail – packages. I’ll get some mail now. Russians on offensive again in North at Danzig and around Breslau – across Oder to a depth of 40 kilometers.

13 February 1945 – Russians still moving W. from Breslau – towards Dresden – 100 miles from Berlin – Out of parcels entirely – lean days ahead. Jerry guard in barracks at suppertime – wanted to know why the Americans are in this war – his family is in Silesia (under the Russians now). Mail call tonite. Alex only one that hit, damn it!

14 February 1945 – Declared a dividend on potatoes tonite – Mac [Matthew McEvoy] & I french fried a bunch. Lights off again all night. Russians now 15 km. W. of Sagan. 100 from Dresden.

15 February 1945 – Budapest fell today – Jerries issued double rations – 8000 letters came in today. [Trian] Neag 18 – Joe 8 – Alex [Seymour Alexander] 4 – Me 0!! Sweat it out some more.

16 February 1945 – 2300 parcels in today – none expected – Blk. 7 beat Blk. 3 – 20 today – 1st football game – Russians still moving – All Quiet on the Western Front. Ed & I cooked today.

18 February 1945 – Sunday. More mail – Neag hit again – 31 in 2 days – none for Ed or I – had a fine meal last nite for a change. Breslau completely encircled. Canadians captured Cassell.

20 February 1945 – Alex got a parcel (from Macy’s N.Y.) today – supplied ingredients for a delicious cake tonite. No parcels (Red X) in sight. The well in front of Blk. 7 is completed – about 20 ft. deep.

24 February 1945 – Food situation acute – Am. and British trucks supposedly in Switz. to bring in Red X parcels but we doubt it. 1st & 9th [Armies] on offensive on Rur toward Cologne. Russians driving W on lower Neisel R. toward Dresden. Play Friday called off – no electric power on.

26 February 1945 – One year a 2nd lieut. Luren fell today – Am. offensive in W. going well – Russians fairly quiet at present. Germans out food rations again – no parcels – we’re really getting hungry now! Mail call today – others who came here with me are getting mail but not I it seems. Started reading autobiography of Lincoln Stephens. Interesting.

27 February 1945 – Americans 12 mi. from Cologne – still going strong – new krieges in today – evacuees – few personal parcels in – rumors about Red X food parcels also. One of the Jerry interpreters shot himself last night.

28 February 1945 – Beautiful clear day today – long chat with Russ Chans & Ted Davis [?] this a.m. Last nite we had about 4 air raids – heard guns at the airfield around 11. We made a cake today! No potatoes left.

2 March 1945 – Russians almost on Baltic at Stolp. [?] – cut off all forces in Danzig & E. Prussia. Am. captured Munchen island back – 6 mi. from Cologne. 150 personal parcels in – very windy but clear today.

6 March 1945 – Stargard fell to Russians – Am.’s entered Cologne – Russians advancing toward S. allies. Last nite got typhoid booster shot – couldn’t sleep – had chills – Ed [Hennegan] & I cooking today.

8 March 1945 – Am. [Americans] have all Cologne W. of Rhine – Patton advancing B/T [between] twd. [towards] Koblenz – Food situation acute. We are existing on bread and ersatz coffee now. Last night’s dinner was plain turnips – tonite’s the same. Looks like the Germans plan to starve us to death. RAF last nite raided Island of Rgen 70 km E of here. Strafing raid nearby the night before. Russians enlarging B/hds. opp. Frankfurt/Oder and at Kustrin – have reached Stettin estuary a short distance north of Stettin. Rolberg pocket almost extinct – Danzig still holds.

10 March 1945 – Lots of trouble yesterday over a missing pot of spuds – the culprit – room 12 [?] – lights on last night from 8 till 9:30 – Patton closing on Coblenz – Russians attacking Stettin & Danzig.

11 March 1945 – Germans admit Am. blhd. over Rhine betw. Coblenz & Cologne – German guards leaving for the front tomorrow – think war will be over very soon now – heard concert in block 5 common room last nite. Classical concert today in theatre.

12 March 1945 – 8th Air Force over this A.M. & overcast – guard shot thru window in Blk. 9 at a kriegie – no food in at all now – tomorrow we starve. Ed got a note from Bennett in N. J. Arrived there from Stalag 4 on Jan 30 – Strick and Waters walking here. FW 190 buzzed us at roll call.

13 March 1945 – Got my first letter today! from Mary [Keiser] dated Dec 14. No food in yet – rough – rainy & cold today – Russians & Ams. enlarging b/hds. – Kustrin fell to Russians.

14 March 1945 – Ams. & Russians extending b/hds. at Kustrin & Reneigen – Lt. W.C. Cassell, who died Sunday, was given military funeral in chapel today – Spuds came in today (1 wks. supply) – delicious noodle & meat soup at noon! Am. bombed Swinemunde (oil) on the 12th.

16 March 1945 – Patch 7th Army started offensive in Saarbrucken yesterday – Patton moving S. from Moselle to link up – Regrouping at Remagen & on E. front. Spuds in camp today. Ed & I cooked today.

17 March 1945 – Tons of spuds arrived – we eat for awhile anyway – Rumors of an emissary from Ribbenthorpe in Sweden – Peace Conference? – Ams. moving in Karlshide [?], Koblenz, Fries triangle.

18 March 1945 – Air raid while in church with Neag – Germans shot two kriegies – Englishman Blk. 6 thru stomach & Am. Lt. Wyman Blk. 4 thru head – rumored killed. Hope we we can pay them back soon for this. News good! Germans almost mopped up W. of Rhine.

19 March 1945 – Lt. Wyman died yesterday at 1430 – Englishman recovering from operation. Kolberg fell today to Russians – Am. going great in Saar area & Koblenz – Finished “Frenchmans Creek.”

21 March 1945 – First of Spring – beautiful day but windy with blowing sand – Funeral for Lt. Wyman this afternoon – Rough house got a personal parcel yesterday – cake in the near future!

23 March 1945 – Spring cleaning today – scrubbed floor, etc. – ate lunch outside – a beautiful warm day – didn’t need even a shirt. News good in W. – Patton mopping up W. of Rhine. B/hd. now 25 mi. x 9 mi. deep – E. Prussia almost out. 1250 personal parcels & 4700 letters in today. Big cake up tomorrow! [Ingredients available to make a cake.]

25 March 1945 – Palm Sunday – 3rd beautiful day in a row – Allies launched big offensive yesterday on lower Rhine between Arnheim & Wesel. It won’t be long now! Delicious cake last night and hamburgers (horse) tonight from kitchen. Ed got his second letter today from Marcy. Extra Patton crossed Rhine in 3 more places – 1st Army attacking on 30 mi. front – Am. & British A/B [airborne] landings – Russian offensive start at Sagan – Open air jam session today – great.

26 March 1945 – Another (4th) clear day!! Good news in W. – Patton has bypassed Frankfurt & is 20 km. E. of the city – new Rhine crossings S. of Ludwigshaven. More A/B landings on lower Rhine in support of Montgomery. 2600 Red Cross parcels came in tonight – 1/4 per man issue tomorrow!

27 March 1945 – Street fighting in Frankfurt – 8 suburbs already captured. Patton driving E. from Aschafhenburg toward Wurzburg. Remagan b/hd. 20-30 km. deep – new b/hds. at Dusseldorf & N. of Mainz. Russians half way to Vienna – Rumors of more Red Cross parcels in today – 1/4 issue this p.m.!

28 Mar 1945 – Am. coffee & jam for breakfast! Sure good – parcels in last nite. Rumor of more on Friday – we planted our garden today – radish, lettuce, beets, chard, corn, carrots – hope we’re not here for the harvest. Made a huge potato chocolate head cake this a.m. The cake was delicious – spam, gravy & spuds – really full for first time in months. We get a full issue of parcels this week – big feed coming upon Easter. News is excellent – Patton running wild 70 km. E. of Frankfurt – Russians only 15 km. from Austrian border. Lots of personal parcels in camp – none issued till after Easter.

29 Mar 1945 – Patton running wild in West – it’s got to be over soon now. More parcels in today – the cupboard is really full – prep. in full swing for Easter feast. Patton 25 km. from Schweinfurt. Personal parcel list up – Alex & Neag hit – more mail in too. (rumor) Am starting to conserve my D-bafs [?] in prep. for some lean days. Spuds in today & tomorrow – week supply. Parcels every 10 days from now on. Cookhouse is going all out – turnips every other day – desserts too. Hamburgers to come on Easter. Kriegie life is definitely on the upswing!!

30 March 1945 – Patton reported 45 km. NE of Marburg – & 50 km. SE of Munsted – Danzig & Guydynia [?] captured – Russians crossed Austrian border – 9th Army NE of Essen. More spuds and Red X parcels in today – On board 1000 Am. personals – rumored 8000 in Barth. Any tick of the clock!

31 March 1945 – Last of this mo. & I hope the last mo. in Stalag Luft. Very windy today – goon guard! News is wonderful! Ruhr is almost encircled – 1st & 9th have linked up. 8 more carloads of Red X in Barth today – 1100 letters to be given out Tues.

1 April 1945 – Easter day – cloudy & cold but we didn’t mind – had prime meals all day – cake excellent tonite. Lots of good news & good rumors – W. front all but collapsed – Christmas parcels in – ! Tomorrow Ed & I cook. 8 km. from Munster – 75 SE Cassell & 20 km. S. Weiner Neustadt & (Austria).

2 April 1945 – Daylight saving in effect this a.m. – still light tonite at 8:30. Washed and cooked today. News good in West & Russians bypassing Vienna. Parcels (1 million) stored in Lubeck.

3 April 1945 – Delicious choc. – raisin pie for dessert – mail call – none for me. Personal parcels not given out yet – Max Schmeling in camp tonite – signed autographs for the kriegies. German appeasement policy in effect these days.

4 April 1945 – Patton has surrounded Eissnach – now 25 km. from Erpirt – Munster street fighting – 2nd Army advancing N along German Dutch border. Parcel list up – Scott only one that hit. Another tomorrow. Had pancakes for breakfast today.

13 April 1945 – Bad news – Pres. Roosevelt died at 12:30 last nite at Warm Spgs. Ga. – cerebral hemorrhage – Truman sworn in as Pres. Allies over Elbe and moving on Berlin – Holland cut off – Germans using ramming tactics against our bombers. Vienna almost cleared.

14 April 1945 – Big open air concert – glee clubs & orchestra this p.m. beautiful day. Patton 7 miles from Leipzig – new b/hds. over Elbe. 25 km from Nurnburg. Vienna captured.

16 April 1945 – Made our Victory cake today! – double layer with choc. icing & nuts on top. Heaven can wait. Russians over to offensive at Kustrin & Frankfurt – Ruhr pocket cut in two. Patton in Leipzig & NE of Chemintz. [Milton] Moore, Mac [Matthew McElvoy], Deacon [Meridith Calvert], Herb [Herbert Clough] sick today – prune whip last nite a guess.

18 April 1945 – Leipzig surrounded today – Patton entered Nurmburg – driving on Planen – Ruhr pocket now cut in 3 parts – Magdeburg frontal assault. Russian offensive which started yesterday going good – extends from Gorlitz to Stettin – Kottbus fell today – Russians within 50 km. of center of Berlin. Rec’d. letter from Mother today! Lots of news and a picture. Col. Zemke boxed Maj. Manserve in North 1 today – Col. won I hear. 8000 Canadian parcels today.

19 April 1945 – Patton almost to Czech border SE of Plauen – Russians on full offensive from Gorletz to Stetten rumored N. of Berlin but no details yet. 8000 Canadian parcels to be issued next week. 3000 personal parcels in today – I’m hoping. I got a letter from Mom (Dec 25) & Mary (Feb 4) today. Wrote all the news in a note to Bud tonite. Clear but windy & sandy today.

21 April 1945 – Raining today – started working on our slit trench under the floor of our room today. Last nite watched the Luftwaffe take off – counted 18 JU 88’s – headed for the east front.

22 April 1945 – Sunday – personal inspection by the Col. this a.m. at roll call. Russians on outskirts of Berlin to NE & E. Two b/hds. over Oder S of Stettin.

23 April 1945 – Russians fighting in heart of Berlin – the pop. has been living in shelters for over 50 hrs. due to air attack. Hitler & Goebbels are both supposed to be in the city. Rumors that the linking between Russians and Am. has taken place between Dessau & Magdelrug on the Elbe. Patton driving into Czechoslovakia toward Pilsen. Canadian parcels came in today – dehydrated apples & real butter & coffee. Russians have increased b/hds. over Oder S. of Stettin – we have been hearing guns off to the SE in that direction for over 48 hrs. Yesterday a.m. G.I. trucks with parcels arrived from Lubeck – driven by Am. & Canadian POW. They have been in & out of German lines near Hamburg. The time is really dragging these days – now that the end is nearly here. “Butcher” Henry Obergeflieter Heinrich Hyslop left for the Ost front!

25 April 1945 – Peace Conference starts today in San Francisco – hope they get some results soon! Supply of spuds came in today – split a delicious Canadian choc. bar with Hezzy [Ed Hennegan]. No military news – radio off. Can still hear guns in the direction of Stettin. Had apple pie for dessert tonite – Canadian parcels are really good.

26 April 1945 – Group photo at roll call this a.m. – individual sq. rations this p.m. Had hotcakes for lunch – prima! Tons of potatoes rolling in all day – rumor has it that British aircraft dropped leaflets on Barth last nite about being responsible for “we kriegies.” Deacon got a food & clothing parcel – lecture on economics by Padre Mitchell this a.m. – he thinks we should all have some firm anchor when we get home – such as a wife – we shall see.

28 April 1945 – Russians attaching SW from Stettin – now 30 mi. from city. Berlin still holding out – women and children reported fighting. More spuds came in y’day – for camp supply on hand now.

30 April 1945 – Lots of excitement today – the Germans seem to be evacuating the camp – their news puts the Russians 60 mi. S. of us today. They flew up the detectors at the flak school this a.m. and are now doing the same with the school. Lots of civilians have been looting our Red X parcels from there. Plenty of air activity the past few days – FW 190’s – one salvoed a bomb near here y’day. Dug a slit trench outside our room today..

1 May 1945 – This is it! Germans evacuated camp and moved west last nite around 2300. Bks. 7 made into M.P.’s [military police] and moved out early this a.m. to the German bks. Sure was wonderful to get outside. Started guard duty in German guard towers in N3. 2 hrs. on & off for 24 hrs.

Wed. 2 May 1945 – Off duty from today noon until tomorrow noon – Russ, Ted, Bud & I & Jack Neal went into the flak school tonite & into Barth. Saw our first Russian troops – armored cols. Several Russians arrived in camp today – Riots in camp, fence & towers demolished – buildings looted & kriegies took off en masse for our lives at Rostook.

Thurs. 3 May 1945 – Situation still acute – kriegies leaving – we’re having a time on duty. Walked around peninsula with Bud after lunch – On duty no picket line SE of camp tonite from 6-10 & tomorrow morning 6-10 – Russians set up a field gun near our post – brot. [brought] over some food for us.

Sun. 6 May 1945 – Situation improving. M.P.s congratulated by Lt. Col McKenzie today for a good job. Russians brot. in a herd of beef cattle for us today. Chased boats all over lagoon on duty today. Russian news reel & movie in theatre this p.m. (Jalta [sic] conference)

Mon. 7 May 1945 – Writing this on a blanket behind the bks. – beautiful warm sunlight feels good. Going on duty again at 6 tonite – outside camp somewhere. Tomorrow the M.P.s get a cow to barbecue. No news definitely of when we’re leaving for home yet.

Tues. 8 May 1945 – Special M.P. tour of Barth & vicinity today. [Jack] Larsen, Zeke [Warren Donovan], Hank [Devereaux], Ed [Hennegan] & I – got on Russian convoy and headed for the country – stopped at German farm. Had the first glass of fresh milk since leaving U.S. Came back to camp about 10 p.m. Fireworks display of Jerry flares captured at airfield. [May 8 was the last of Dick’s POW journal entries.]

Unfortunately, these records are too illegible to be scanned, so they have been transcribed and inserted in these pages as a Calendar of Events. There are still some entries that are not clear.
